Wiki is a tool for creating community-editable websites. Wiki is also a philosophy about how content should be created and maintained.

As a tool, wiki is a series of web pages that anyone can edit using a markup language that is even simpler than HTML. Just click the 'edit' button (or tab) on any page to edit it. Make changes or additions to the text and save it. All changes are logged in a source control system so we can undo damage that a naughty person might do.

As a philosophy, wiki espouses the belief that communities can create content together and that content should be owned by the community.

(I don't necessarily want my fantasy setting to be public domain, so I am not using wiki for philosophical reasons. I just like the tool cuz it is very easy for me to add content and links, and it's very easy for other people to discuss that content and add stuff themselves if they want.)
