In a small land-locked kingdom in the corner of the Towerlands, His Majesty Andevan Rusland Pollert Essonay inherited his crown from his mother at age 16 and has ruled for 37 years. Though the gold and black 'bear' banner has never fallen from the keep's highest tower, Rusland's four decade rule has been full of trouble. Bandits, raiders, droughts and famines, even attacks from monsters and unnatural undead — many things have conspired against the small kingdom, but Rusland's love of his land has protected it. Rusland is not a scion but his ties to the land are deep.

All of the Towerland of Essonay's neighbors but one are hostile or neutral at best. The Towerland of Berus is loyal but gains more from the relationship than it gives, since it is much smaller. The largest threat to the kingdom's peace is the Towerland of Talazc to the south, ruled by the sorcerer-king Ambrudos Csanyi, an evil scion. Csanyi uses his ties to the land to send evil beasts and abominations across the border into the kingdom. The scion's powers and the land he controls are strong and he has dark allies.

Essonay mainly relies upon its guard, the Agersiin (or Gold Bears), for protection. The Agersiin boasts a soldiery of 100 trained spearmen and 50 archers. In times of need, the keep can gather 1200 soldiers (400 of which are veterans) from the surrounding town of Talienne. The kingdom's villages can field an army of 25,000 (6,500 of which are veterans). Talienne is entirely surrounded by a twenty foot-high wall and it has two strong gatehouses. There is a taller inner wall, as well, enclosing the keep itself. The kingdom's citizens are comfortable with the constant presence of soldiers; it makes them feel safe.
